Iron Ore Heritage Trail photo wins National Recreational Trail photo contest

February 2, 2023

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail, as a National Recreation Trail adopted by the Department of the Interior, won a 2022 National Recreation Trail photo contest in the category of Rail and Canal Trails. Debby Muskovitch, the photographer, caught Dan Wiitala (her husband) and Carol Fulsher as they biked underneath the LS&I trestle while a LS&I train was returning to the mine after delivering pellets to the Lower Harbor.
“We try to submit photos every year to bring awareness to our little corner of the world. We have such beautiful and historic resources on this trail, it’s easy to find photos. We have won several years in a row with professional photography and amateur photography. We’re pleased to be included again,” related Carol Fulsher, Administrator of the Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority.
The National Recreation Trail (NRT) program through the National Park Service brings in new trails annually through a competitive process and the Iron Ore Heritage Trail won it’s place in this prestigious group in 2018. The contest is only open to NRT trails. All winners can be viewed at https://www.americantrails.org/photos/2022-nrt-photo-contest.
