The 12-mile section connecting Negaunee to Marquette is now open. Partially paved with asphalt, but mostly a crushed granite, the trail is open to non-motorized users in the warm weather months and snowmobiling in winter. With this new section now open, the Iron ORe Heritage Trail now offers users approximately 30 miles of upgraded trail surface between Kawbawgam Road in Chocolay to Winthrop Junction in Ishpeming. The remaining portion (Winthrop Junction to Republic) is open to the public but not upgraded.
